Interview with Bollywood makeup artist Mickey Contractor – Part II

[This is Part II to my interview with Mickey Contractor, M.A.C's Director of Makeup Artistry for India. The first part of the interview can be found on MarieClaire.com HERE]

Me and makeup artist Mickey Contractor

As promised (a while ago, I know), here are some more details on my interview with makeup genius Mickey Contractor. I sat down with Mickey the day after he came with us on a tour of M.A.C’s headquarters. In between doing makeup for Bollywood celebs like Priyanka Chopra for the IIFA’s, he shared some of his thoughts on his experience at M.A.C’s labs and a few tips too!

: Did going on the M.A.C. tour with us change your perspective at all on makeup?
Mickey Contractor: I wouldn’t say it changed my perspective on makeup. For me it was like a religious experience. Going into the M.A.C lab and meeting all the chemists who actually made my products was like a wish being granted. I was so tired that morning on the bus as you might remember. Once I went there though, I woke up. I don’t know how! I didn’t sleep until 3 that morning. It was an overwhelming experience. It truly was a dream come true.

BATF
: What was the most challenging part in creating your own line?
MC: Mixing colors was challenging but extremely joyful. To tweak the submissions that came back after the testers was the most challenging because there is very little difference between tester 1, 2 and 3. Apart from that, I would say doing Master Classes. I hate being in front of people doing makeup. I rather do it behind the scenes, be really quiet about it. For me, doing makeup is a very personal time with who I’m working on. It’s very sacred to me.

The Rare and Beautiful at the OC Concept Store in NYC

I’m not sure what I expected to see when I went to check out brand new luxury boutique, OC Concept Store on Madison Ave. Based on its location alone, (right across from Barneys) I thought it would be a shopping experienced reserved solely for the privileged — but I was so wrong.

Lower level of The OC Concept Store

While there is no doubt that the meticulously curated store contains one-of-a-kind rarities (many of which you will ONLY find in this store stateside) that enter a pretty hefty price point, entrepreneur and jewelry designer Orianne Collins was thinking on a much broader scale when it came to her clientele, and who the bi-level, 3,400 square ft. store caters to. It’s the most unique shopping destination I’ve seen so far, like a mini-luxe mall. The expert staff stands ready to serve anyone who walks through the door, and don’t expect to be pressured to purchase anything…although, I’ll say with the GORGEOUS jewelry and accessories, I can’t promise you won’t be tempted to. But take their champagne/espresso bar for example — you can literally just stop in for a drink and no one will judge you for it:

Jennifer Fleming beauty tip: shadows first!

Makeup artist, Jennifer Fleming

Makeup artist, Jennifer Fleming

OK, full disclosure, I met a lot of wonderful makeup and hair people today at an event downtown. Texas-native and makeup guru, Jennifer Fleming, was one of them and talking with her was such a treat!

One of the things I noticed she did was my eye makeup (consisting mostly of soft plum shadows) before she did anything on my face.

I asked her about it, since I usually do my concealer first. She advised to do eye shadows and makeup before concealer and foundation since if any of the shadows falls under your eyes, it’s easier to clean and cover than putting everything on and trying to fix it after the fact.

Beauty Tips from the set of Lost Part II

Emily Katz

Emily Katz

Hope you enjoyed reading Part I of my interview with Emily Katz, Makeup Supervisor on the set of Lost! Here are some more tips from Emily, and we talk bronzer, eye liner…and food! Read on:

SA: What bronzers or blushes do you recommend for different skin tones?

EK: I like to use the Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder for darker skin tones, but I use Estée Lauder in rose or plum nuance normally on Asian skin tones, or medium complexions. On fair or freckly skin, I use Benefit Posie Tint, which is absolutely brilliant. It’s not shimmery, so great for the “on island” look and fantastic on fair, olive, or latin skin tones. Sometimes on lighter skin I use the MAC Matte Bronzer, and to get that sunkissed look, sometimes the Bobbi Brown in Apricot, which you have to be careful with because it can easily look graphically neon. Bobbi Brown in Clementine is a little more user-friendly, and not as vivid but still has that bright peachy color.
