Beauty Tip of the Day

Nail art of the day

I just couldn’t resist…it’s the journalist in me:

Newspaper nails

Stumbled upon these newspaper-print nails, that were literally made using newspaper. The blog where you can find a tutorial on these nails is written in French though…so unless parlez vous Français, I suggest heading over to Google Translate to de-code these tips!

Celeb makeup artist James Vincent on concealer, foundation, & the new products he’s most excited for

I first met James Vincent at The Makeup Show last year. He was giving bloggers a preview of some of the latest and greatest products and seriously, he was like a reservoir of golden beauty tips. His ability to create the most flawless faces has led his career to movie sets and photo shoots to working with some of the most well-known celebs like Lady Gaga, Liv Tyler, and Joan Jett. I caught up with him about some of the beauty concerns you all have asked me about recently. In true James Vincent-style, he eloquently lists his useful tips on skin and color theory in a way that just shows you why he’s so respected in this field. Read on:

Makeup artist, James Vincent

BATF: You’re already well-known in the fashion and beauty circles, but for those readers who may not be familiar with your work, could you give a quick run down of how you got to where you are, doing makeup on celebs like Lady Gaga to becoming the Director of Artistry Relations and Education for The Makeup Show?

James Vincent: It’s a combination of setting goals, having the drive to meet my goals, having the personality and ability to follow up, and the makeup technique to back it up. Having the ability to put yourself out there and network has gotten very easy because of social media, but if you don’t have the technique to back it up then there’s not a credibility that comes along with. I feel like I’ve been very lucky — I’ve met people who have been mentors to me and that’s one of the reasons education and mentoring is such a big part of what I do. Giving back is so essential.

Celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal’s beauty tips for Fall

Totally giddy to be posing next to the fabulous Mally Roncal

I’ve been doing a lot of interviews with makeup artists for Fashion Week, but I have to say this might be the highlight for me: an interview with Beyoncé’s go-to makeup girl, Mally Roncal. Her celeb clientele reads like a Who’s Who of Hollywood: JLo, Mary J. Blige, Hayden Panettiere, Rihanna, Ashlee Simpson

I’ve been such a fan of her’s and have been wanting to meet her forever, not only because I love her work, I truly LOVE her makeup line Mally Beauty. Her New Naturals Twin Blush & Highlighter has been a staple in my makeup bag for years. I was SO excited to finally meet her and she was just as sweet in person as I imagined. She graciously shared her thoughts on trends this Fall (plus some unique tips, one that includes Scotch Tape!), and even some of her favorite places to eat in the city. Check out the video to see what I mean when I say she’s incredible adorable:

How to: make beachy waves using a clipless iron

Beachy waves tutorial

I have had a ton of people ask me about the waves I’ve been doing in my hair recently (I think mostly after this post!), so I finally managed to finish this beachy waves tutorial that I’ve been promising you all I would do. It’s my very first video how-to video so I’m still trying to navigate my way around how I’ll do them going forward. But can I just say that making this video was NOT as easy as I hoped it would be? That’s largely due to the fact that my editing program decided to suck halfway through and just NOT work, but it took two trips to the Apple store, three hours, and about six guys at the Genius bar before we successfully were able to import the last bit of footage.just.for.you.

Jose Eber Clipless Iron, available at folica.com

Here’s what you need:
- Wide-tooth comb
- A 25 mm clipless iron (I use Jose Eber’s Pro Series available at folica.com)
- One hair clip (or more if you have thicker hair). I use TS-2 styling clips.
- Heat protectant spray. I use Turbo Power Forma Thermal Lotion
- A flexible hair spray, like Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly
